On the other side of that coin, however, I think Alex has reminded us that larger systems take longer to intensify even despite pressure falls. We kept waiting for Alex to show some RI because of the largely favorable conditions in the BoC and it never happened. Only just before landfall did we see something close to what conditions warranted--at least in theory.
We saw Katrina hold steady at 115 mph for quite some time despite having pressures low enough to sustain a cat 4 storm. That too was a large system. Of course she blew up the next day but it took longer for wind speeds to correspond with pressure than we thought it would. |
