I am a disaster contractor. I began doing storm clean up in 1996 and have probably visited  every US land fall since 2000. I have seen a lot of misery and confusion. The biggest thing I see is people who weather the storm fine.... but run out of gas, food, water before things open up again. I have seen people decide to leave two weeks after the storm and not have the gas to get out You wind up dealing with mre's and waiting in line for ice at a FEMA site. You can spend all day trying to get ice and water. The aftermath is no fun. If you are the survivalist, who is prepared, you better be ready to fight off the guys who weren't prepared!

My point would be get out.... evacuate and don't come back till the power is on, gas flowing and grocery store stocked! Having lived through the aftermath over and over, and seeing capable people wishing they had left over and over please take this to heart! While things may work out.... it's not worth the misery you're about to suffer if they don't!

I own a house 2 blocks from the Gulf and if a Cat 1 or above was even a remote possibility I would get out! If it was a bust I'd head home..... otherwise power on and gas flowing are a must before returning!
