Osyaya, we have Citizens windstorm coverage, the FL insurer of last resort and as far as I know the only windstorm insurance available on the island.  You're correct that the storm doesn't actually have to've hit (and I apologize for the error) in order to collect living expenses.  The key phrase of yours is, "if a mandatory evacuation order has been placed."  That's very true.

When I said we like to get out of Dodge early, I meant a couple of days before the storm is predicted to hit, and that's so far always been before mandatory evacuation takes effect, even though we know it's coming.  The early night or nights (depending on just how soon we opt to leave) are on us.

As an aside, one thing I found interesting about living expense reimbursement was that, while hotel meals were covered, once we moved into a rental house we were not reimbursed for groceries/meals because it was as if we had just set up housekeeping elsewhere -- food was a normal expense we would've had even had we not been displaced.  Makes sense, of course, but these are things you learn.  I'd rather not have had the opportunity!

BTW: Correction:  I meant to write "five years," not six, when referring to recent years' relative calm.  And that still doesn't mean we haven't gone through some scares and nerves.  :-)
