I finally had to sign up with Citizens insurance this month. My previous insurance company told us they were canceling our policy later this year and that they recommended switching immediately since if our house was hit by a hurricane they were not sure they would be able to cover the damage. (That letter seemed like it should have been illegal.)

In the process of switching over to Citizens which took a few months to get things going, they canceled my policy because while my dad signed the policy I had not and while the agent selling the policy said I didn't have to sign it since I did not sign the last policy, and it should be okay, it wasn't. Over the few months they never did send a letter to let me know they needed my signature, just a you're canceled. Oddly enough, they sent an inspector out previously and realized that I needed to pay more, so Citizens sent us a bill to pay the difference that they increased it due to the inspection and my dad paid it and mailed it off as soon as he got it. The next day, Citizens canceled us. But we immediately visited the agent, I signed the paperwork, the agent called Citizens and within a few hours it was on the way to being fixed officially days later when we got the paperwork and they said there would be no lapse in coverage if a hurricane formed and struck.

I can't imagine what an insurance company would be like when you are trying to get money from them. Even when you are trying to pay them they can be difficult.
