Chris is absolutely right. Katrina was Cat 3 at landfall but brought Cat 5 surge to the Gulf coast nonetheless. Surge does not wind down in unison with winds or pressure--it takes longer for surge to reduce in proportion to a weakening storm's intensity.
Chris's map suggests that surge potential is particularly severe on the east side of the storm (which is usually the case). That means that east Long Island, Rhode Island and the Buzzard's Bay area of Massachusetts may be in for a kind of storm surge the media is not adequately describing.
I agree with Chris that too much focus is placed on the storm's Category--more focus needs to be placed on the extend to which the storm surge will exceed the storm's given intensity. |
