Hard to say, from experience I know 90% of the time the actual impact is less than forecast, but there is that 10%, not a small risk. Your neighbors and coworkers have probably been thought this before and know it will likely be less than forecast. Its hard to say if that's wisdom or foolish complacency speaking.

Mandatory evacuations are given across broad areas, the truth is not everyone in a mandatory evacuation zone needs to go. If you really understand your situation, how well your house is constructed, what your elevation is, and your personal ability to live without power, running water, or road access for a few days or weeks you might be able to make a rational decision to stay, if not you probably need to go.

I used to live on Alligator Point, and we ignored a lot of "mandatory evacuations". The storm that did us the most damage, Dennis in 2005 no such warning was issued and we did evacuation for that one and were glad we did.

Best of luck and be careful.
