We would definitely evacuate were we in Panama City Beach, and have done so several times in the past from Pensacola Beach, though this time we've been planning to hunker down, since we're outside the cone, on the better side of the storm, and (especially) because surge is expected to be pretty minimal here compared to your area and east.
The other thing is, there has been NOT ONE WORD from the authorities about evacuation here, which would match our assessment -- except that tonight I received a rather cryptic personal email from a county commissioner hinting that something could be coming tomorrow morning. WHAT?? To my mind, an evac order that late would be unforgivable, not to mention unnecessary unless there's some big swing in the forecast track. I sure hope he just meant a decision would be coming, and that it would likely be NOT to order an evac.
Will admit we've been through two or three onerous false alarm evacs over the years here, including for Hurricane Nate just last October, and it has probably colored our decision making some, but again, if we were in Mark's shoes, we would've been planning to go for the past couple of days.
All in all, just VERY stressful for this older couple. Don't quite know what's going to happen, but the hotel where we've had tentative reservations may be closing anyway.. Will give them a call in the morning, and hope we don't have to be making other plans and trying to pack up at the same time. UGH. Wonder if I'll sleep tonight....winds are already picking up.
In any event, GOOD LUCK MARK!! Keep in touch as you can. Wishing the best for you and yours and your property.
