Re: Happened to me last week

It's something we might consider, but the question is where to move. That's always the question. It would almost definitely be somewhere in the area, but further inland out of the flood zone. Maybe in the same county, or maybe a county away.

I finally took a look at the letter for the coverage we rejected.

It was for Slide Insurance Company, a Tampa company that started two years ago.

Our Citizens insurance is $5,059.00 and the insurance with the new company would have been $10,911.00.

It's funny, the letter started off with:

"Great news! You have received an offer of property insurance coverage from one or more private-market insurance companies."

Sure, great news.

The letter was dated September 28, 2023.

It said this:

"This is an important decision, but one that needs to be made quickly. You must register your choice by November 6, 2023,"

And then said:

"After you accept an offer - and if your policy is not pending cancellation or nonrenewal - coverage with your new insurance company will begin on November 21, 2023."

Our current Citizens policy started Jul 6, 2023 and was to expire Jul 6, 2024, so they would have kicked us off quick had we not declined the offer.

We actually have a depopulation letter coming today in the mail, even though in our Citizens account we have confirmation we declined it on September 29th. We signed up for free USPS Informed Delivery so we get pictures of what mail is coming each day in the morning. (free service from the postal service: https://www.usps.com/manage/informed-delivery.htm ) I can slightly see what is inside and it might be that letter, or one formatted just like it, weeks late, and weeks after we declined, even though on the envelope it is dated October 10th. We'll see what it is today. It could be another depopulation letter. There could be another at any time. But I think I can read November inside where the other letter had November.

They should not be allowed to kick people off automatically if they don't respond and the offer is twice as much. That's insane. Email to the spam folder and/or a lost piece of mail, and I would pay twice as much. Although maybe you would be able to get back on immediately, though I do actually kind of doubt that.

They'll probably get to everyone eventually Jim. I would assume no one would take my policy for within 20% of what I pay. It would be crazy and an unwise business decision. Although if you charge as much as that company was, it's still crazy, but less so.
