Jim,
Dauphin Island didn't allow the rigs there. The State of Alabama did. The northern part of my fine state pimps out the coastal part. No one realizes that nearly 500 Million dollars in revenue comes into the state of Alabama each year, due to oil drilling leases, royalties, and payments. Tourism is a 10 Million plus a year reveue stream for the State, in Mobile and Baldwin counties. The port brings in hundreds of millions of dollars each year for the State, and the cruise terminal.
I say all of that to indicate that whether I agree or disagree with the drilling, this State sells us out to pay for everything else.
Mobile and Baldwin counties don't belong in Alabama. They belong in a coastal state like Florida to be quite honest. At least Mississippi takes care of its coastal counties.
I know it's off topic a bit, but I just get steamed. And not the oil spill traps us here, with no fishing, no seafood industry until further notice, while the rest of the State enjoys (65 other counties) the fruits of rig lease payments.
Just a big by the way. In 1979, ITOX-1 released nearly 140 million gallons into the southern and central Gulf of Mexico, and the Bay of Campeche, with the same type of spill. Hurricane Frederic came through the southern central Gulf with little to no effect one way or the other on the oil spill. That may help with answering the oil spill question.
I can't imagine a Katrina or Ivan size wave, topped with oil, pushing into the marshes for miles and into southern MS and AL. It would be sad, just like it already is.
Sorry, couldn't help it. Jim, thanks, that was therapeutic. |
