Re: politically incorrect response

Jim, when you say "you asked for it, you got it," I hope you didn't mean me among them, since I'm a Floridian, too (Pensacola Beach) and have always opposed drilling off our shores. Nevertheless I can relate to those who say their states condoned it against their express wishes. As you know, more than once we've come close to being in the same boat ourselves here in Florida -- which is precisely why I'll back Crist's proposed constitutional amendment, political ploy or otherwise -- though I wish it could permanently ban drilling a lot farther offshore than it apparently will. And I hate that other states' drilling operations will continue to threaten us here in the Panhandle regardless.
I'm with LawKat in dreading the thought of an oil-laden surge coming ashore anywhere. Whether or not the storm breaks up the spill, if the slick -- or even just broken-up parts of it, with or without tar balls -- are carried ashore and washed farther inland, I fear it's gonna be one holy mess, a contamination nightmare.
As far as no one's saying "I can't wait to see it come here," maybe I misunderstand you, but to that I respond of course not. I have to believe very few people truly want it to come where THEY are; they just want the thrill of watching it come ashore in someone ELSE'S back yard. Human nature, that -- though not the prettiest part. I often wonder just how many hurricane lovers have ever lived through the heartbreak, stress, and life disruption of having their home or business and possessions destroyed in a storm. Somehow I doubt there are all that many, but maybe I'm wrong.
As for the "respect" you call for, Jim, good for you and thank you for that, but somehow I'm not sure it will change certain attitudes. Time will tell. Again, I know I'm free to leave the room if something offends me.
As to the fact that "If all hurricanes went out to sea without affecting land there would be a fraction of the posts on this board," with all due respect and affection, please forgive my own political incorrectness in saying: that would be a day I would celebrate. __BL |
