Like both top 5 lists.

My top 5:

5)  1856 Last Island/1893 Hog Island  (tie)
4)  1938 Long Island Express
3)  1926 Miami
2)  Katrina
1)  1900 Galveston

Galveston, thanks to Thomas Edison will forever be etched in the minds of those who live in harm's way.  That death toll, one can surmise, will never be passed again in the US.  Gave way to modern building along coastlines with seawalls and raised elevations.

Katrina is the modern indelible mark on the national consciousness.

1926 storm reshaped Miami forever and literally.  (Also, well known for its destruction up this way too, Jim).

1938 Express showed the east coast what can happen and that it does happen.

1856/1893 are the only hurricanes on record to have completely "disappeared" an inhabited landmass.  Lots of places are in danger of this occurring in our lifetimes.  It nearly happened to the Bolivar Peninsula in Texas in 2008 (Ike).  It will happen again.
