Today's White House briefing was a turning point

It still had a lot of crazy and untrue things that are not worth covering, but it was still a turning point. The fact that 2.2 million Americans could die isn't a new number. I don't know when they finally presented that to Trump, but it's been around for awhile and he made it seem like he just heard it. That was more of a worst case scenario so we're hoping we don't still reach those kind of numbers in the next year.
https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/29/politics/trump-deaths-coronavirus/index.html
"President Donald Trump acknowledged Sunday for the first time that deaths in the United States from coronavirus could reach 100,000 or more, adding that if the death toll stays at or below 100,000, 'we all together have done a very good job.'"
Setting aside that above statement, at least he is finally listening to the doctors.
"On Sunday, Trump said during an evening news conference at the White House that he'd decided to extend the nationwide social distancing guidelines -- which include suggested limits on large gatherings -- for another 30 days to April 30."
We needed people to hear that this will get a lot worse. Not enough people were taking this seriously enough. I hope that now that people see this as something that will go on at least a month, in reality probably for two years, but at least for a month, people will take it more seriously. Before people might have been thinking we were about to turn a corner by Easter and things would open again. (and may already have not been social distancing) Now that Trump is listening to the doctors, hopefully the country as a whole will as well. There's no conflicting signals right now. Things are going to get worse. I hope the rest of the states lockdown now too. We really need to all do this for a month. |
