I agree with Bobbi though. Water poses a much greater threat to human safety than wind with this storm IMO. Irene is a massive storm that does not need to be a major to bring potentially historic storm surges to areas that really haven't been tested by a system of this magnitude in many years--I'm speaking chiefly of NYC, Long Island, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. It's important to note that many of these areas have already seen record rainfall in recent weeks, so the torrential rains Irene may bring will possibly pose as much of a threat as storm surge. In the end Irene's legacy will be one of water, not wind.

It has literally been 190 years since we have seen a Cat 2 take the path currently projected by NHC--that would be the 1821 Norfolk and Long Island hurricane that flooded lower Manhattan up to canal Street.
