Re: so glad you got an appt. for your dad, Chris

I'm not sure how people get the vaccine right now if they have medical issues, but don't meet the age requirements. For anyone that meets the age requirements, I would recommend looking at the options available in getting it, including asking their doctor, though I don't know how that works either. I've seen that recommended though I bet that isn't very promising.

I didn't have to look into the other options because I was able to do it through local government to find out how to get it. But even that isn't always easy. For my county, Hillsborough, the information was easy to find, though they post more frequent information on social media:

So you have to know where to look. For some of my relatives in Tennessee, I had to do some more searching because the information was on unverified Facebook pages which I had to confirm were real.

Lawrence County, Tennessee (login required to view their Facebook page):

And I was able to signup for a waiting list on a 3rd party site they are using. They only posted the link on that Facebook page.

My dad got the first dose. I signed him up in the first appointment window and that worked out great. He got there a bit early since he could do that to some extent for the first window of the day. (they turn you away if you show up early at other times) The window was 8am to 9am and at 8:03am he got the shot. 15 minutes later he could leave.

I also got a family member a dose in Tennessee after I signed them up for a waiting list. I have my 98 year old grandmother on a waiting list too but in her county she was about 5 times further down the list than the relative that already got it. All of this was based on age so we didn't have to prove what medical conditions they have. Some of the people in my family who might qualify for a medical reason already had the virus and luckily did well. At least for some of the family members that already had the virus they were told they can't get the vaccine for a certain period of time. I don't know if that is for some medical reason or because they will have some immunity for now and want to give the vaccine to someone who doesn't have any immunity.

My dad hasn't been to any doctors' appointments since before the pandemic. He's been able to renew all his prescriptions. We weren't sure if they were going to continue to allow refills but he was able to schedule a virtual doctor's visit on my tablet last week and they refilled them even more. So if possible people should look into that kind of option if needed. Many people have cell phones with cameras so if you need to do a virtual visit through video, and it is available, it is worth trying. My dad has had various appointments scheduled since early last year but keeps delaying them every few months. He has them if he really needs them and wouldn't have to wait however long if he tried to schedule one when he needs it. Even his doctor on the virtual visit said he didn't want him to go out and get lab work done right now during the pandemic.

I am a little concerned about how second doses are going to work. If they give out all they have when they get it, they may not meet the demand of the second doses for the appointments they have already scheduled. That was my concern before my dad got the first dose but we went ahead and got him that one anyway. At some point soon that may mean the number of first doses given out will be decreased.
