There are caveats. Depending on the 24 hour time period probably, there are reports of 1.3 to 1.5 million new cases on Monday depending on the source. Because some things are delayed in reporting over the weekend, Mondays probably have more cases reported. But the 7 day average is over 700,000 cases per day. Hospitalizations with people that have the coronavirus are also now at a record for the pandemic. But with that statistic you have to also keep in mind that if someone entered the hospital with something else and then tested positive, it still counts. But of course some areas have hospitals that are at, or near, capacity, some when it comes to their ICUs, so it's bad out there in a lot of places like it was earlier in the pandemic.
My 99 year old grandmother has a housekeeper that comes each month. She was supposed to come on Monday but called that day saying she couldn't come because she had the coronavirus. That was a very close call. While for most, very much so for the vaccinated, the Omicron variant has been milder. But it's still deadly for some. There are people more at risk, even if they are vaccinated and boosted like my grandmother is.
Tampa has a parade at the end of this month (Gasparilla) in which hundreds of thousands of people, many of them drunk, will get together partying, so I can't wait to see how that goes. It's actually part of a lot of various other events too. It was canceled last year but this year it's completely on. I think I'll plan on getting enough groceries before that happens. Seems like Mardi Gras is on in New Orleans too this year.
At this point it does seem like a lot of people are going to get this virus during this period, but there's just some things we could absolutely do without for just one more year. (or delay until the summer at least) |
