Re: More on the "Potential Tropical Cyclone" issue

This is the only way they can do it that doesn't break things. All the sites that get data would have to change.

Also, "P" is already used, for South Pacific storms:
https://www.nrlmry.navy.mil/atcf_web/docs/database/new/abdeck.txt

Numbering has always been a little off in a way. You can have 15 depressions in a year, numbered 01 to 15. But you can have 13 storms. The 13th named storm would have the storm number 15 because two depressions didn't develop into a named storm.

It's going to be odder certainly. Earlier in the year, one of the mets at the NHC wasn't sure if a potential tropical cyclone would get a tropical cyclone report at the end of the year. I hoped we got one that didn't develop. I wanted to see what happened at the end of the year.

As of now, whatever storm number we end on will not reflect the number of actual depressions. You'll have to subtract one. I don't know how that will be shown in the master storm list:
http://ftp.nhc.noaa.gov/atcf/archive/storm.table
Through 2016. It has named storms and depressions. It might just have "LO" for low. "TD" is a tropical depression and "SD" is a subtropical depression. (refer to abdeck.txt) If it wasn't even low, it might  have "DB" for disturbance or "WV" for tropical wave. That might be how we tell the difference in that list.

I already have an issue in the historical statistics that my site generates:
http://tropicalatlantic.com/models/models.cgi?statistics=1
Potential Tropical Cyclone Ten is listed as a depression. I still have to fix that.

But if you changed the numbering system in some other way, sites would really have a problem. All the software is designed to work with the current system. It's been that way for a very long time.
