I know it doesn't fully answer your point but perhaps the Deep South and East Coast having an extremely cold December has affected SSTs?
The polar vortex is killing water temps in this part of the world, while driving them sharply upwards in other places (such as west of Greenland.)
On the surface (pun intended) it seems our climate normalcy is in the process of fracturing; our security blankets slipping away. Stop the madness....I want to get off!
Well Jac....at least it'll be a fun show! (And yes Jim, I know it's unfair to say that because I live in the geographical comfort of North Carolina.)
