my take on this

As crazy as this may sound the feds are setting up BP  for it's days in court so they have no wiggle room.
If the feds released the real numbers of gallons per day right from the start it would be the feds word vrs BP. The way it is now is the feds just repeat what BP says, this way in court the feds can claimBP lied from the start.
If the feds took total control & told BP to take a hike BP could claim the feds would not let them handle it the way it should be handled acording to BP.
The cleanup operation is fruitless there is simply too much oil & if you lined up a vessel every 100 yards for 300 plus miles you would need 6,400 vessels large enough to hold the oil removed from the water so little if any oil would reach the coast. Now you need training for all of the people involved on those vessels on how to handle the equpiment to remove the oil, we are talking tens of thousands of people (lets not even bring a hurricane into this) is piling up for huge judgements against BP and if the government could somehow wave a magic wand & make the oil go away (which wont happen no matter what) BP would benefit in the end. BP does not want people on beaches that are not qualified handling oil so they cant be sued for that too. If the government endorsed every tom dick & harry to go fetch oil BP would say "we told them not to" & we are not reponsible for them getting sick.
OPTION B Tell BP to take a hike & the feds completely take over shut down & clean up BP gets let off the hook game over..
OPTION C other oil companies work together to stop & clean up NOT GONNA HAPPEN they dont want to end up in court either.
Obama said we are asking questions so we know whos ass to kick, they are setting up BP to pay for all of those that lost money because of this disaster that will last for years.
