Blizzard warnings all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico, a rare sight I would say. (I couldn't resist, lol. If I can't laugh, I'd be punching a hole in the wall.)
The hurricane hunters fly winter missions all the time. They come out in the Plan of the Day during the winter:
https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/recon.php
For example:
WEATHER RECONNAISSANCE FLIGHTS CARCAH, NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER, MIAMI, FL. 1250 PM EST MON 20 JANUARY 2025 SUBJECT: WINTER SEASON PLAN OF THE DAY (WSPOD) VALID 21/1100Z TO 22/1100Z JANUARY 2025 WSPOD NUMBER.....24-051 AMENDMENT
I. ATLANTIC REQUIREMENTS 1. NEGATIVE RECONNAISSANCE REQUIREMENTS. 2. OUTLOOK FOR SUCCEEDING DAY.....NEGATIVE.
II. PACIFIC REQUIREMENTS (CHANGED) 1. NEGATIVE RECONNAISSANCE REQUIREMENTS. 2. OUTLOOK FOR SUCCEEDING DAY: A USAF RESERVE WC-130J AIRCRAFT BUOY DEPLOYMENT MISSION IS PLANNED OVER THE EASTERN PACIFIC ON 22 JAN. 3. ADDITIONAL DAY OUTLOOK: A USAF RESERVE WC-130J AIRCRAFT AND THE NOAA G-IV AIRCRAFT MAY FLY TWO CONCURRENT ATMOSPHERIC RIVERS MISSIONS OVER THE EASTERN AND CENTRAL PACIFIC FOR THE 24/0000Z SYNOPTIC TIME. It comes out from the National Hurricane Center I guess. There is someone that coordinates that and I guess they are the one that does the winter missions too.
There is a manual of winter storm stuff that has a various details. I haven't ever looked at it much: https://www.icams-portal.gov/resources/ofcm/nwsop/nwsop2.htm
For places that aren't used to this, I really hope people are staying where they are. Without all that equipment, no one is going anywhere on the roads unless they want to risk their lives.
One of the local meteorologists here posted an outlier run of a model yesterday that showed the tiniest chance of something other than rain around me. I wouldn't mind seeing something frozen hit the ground for a few minutes just to say I witnessed it. I have on a couple occasions here. One I remember clearly, sleet I think. It hit my mailbox and melted almost instantly when the tiniest little pellets hit.
Snow totals so far around southeast Texas:
If that isn't visible, static image I saved:
