I hate both winter and summer. Usually Florida is just summer so the winter is nice enough because it's like fall/spring in other places probably, with an occasional drop in the temperature. We just usually rebound quickly and that's what has been really unusual. But climate change can make things more extreme and change things up, even some areas getting colder at times. Our high Thursday was about 49F. Anchorage was 48F.
My dad and I were talking about how cold it is. You could get a freeze here and be 70's to 80's within a day or two to start getting rid of the dead plants. Thankfully no freezes near me, but no quick rebound on temperatures until finally a few days for now.
We were in the 60's for highs Sunday. Then 50's as highs Monday and Tuesday, Then 40's as highs Wednesday and Thursday. 50's today. 60's Saturday and then 70's Sunday with increasing temperatures to the mid 70's in the middle of the week. They were interviewing lots of people from out of town on the local news last night. The shops that sell some colder weather clothing were selling it to people who brought shorts and bathing suits on vacation here. Our water temps along west coast of Florida are around 55F to 45F. (https://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/map/) 25 to 35 degrees too cold for me, lol.
My house is built poorly when it comes to cooling or heating, but I would imagine a lot are with single pane windows in the area. It can pay to get double pane probably for some people.
The heat still has trouble keeping up running a lot. I have it at 67F right now. Although my dad put it up to 70F this morning and let it warm up with the auxiliary heat and then back to 67F. Normal heat runs forever, so we like to do that sometimes when it really gets cold. It's just what we do when it gets to the 30's outside especially, like this morning. I use a little heater before I take a shower. It's a small Honeywell one from Walmart. Have to be careful with stuff like that. But it does the trick.
At least I know the heat can get up quickly if needed with the auxiliary heat. like when I want to increase it when it gets warmer in the afternoon. We turn it up more in the afternoon. It's just when you are around 40F outside and trying to get it around 70F inside, that's a 30F difference. In summer, you might be talking about, for us anyway, 10F difference or less sometimes. We keep it around 80 to 82F in the summer. So it runs less. A lot more work to do in the winter on really cold days with the way our house is built.
Thankfully we don't have to worry about freezing pipes. I guess you need that for your attic maybe. I know some houses have water heaters up there. |
