Creating your own face shield
Posted by Chris in Tampa on 4/10/2020, 11:58 pm
I had thought about, before my dad found a painters mask and chemistry goggles, of wearing a large hat with plastic taped to it. I was going to use large Ziploc bags, the clear side without writing if it had it, and tape them together so I created a kind of shield. It would have looked silly and it was not very clear to see out of, but it would have been something. Maybe you have a clearer type of plastic? Even a baseball cap maybe for a hat. I had seen something someone created on the news in the past few days. Couldn't tell what they did.

But I just Googled:

And found:

Just looking from those links and on Amazon for plastic binding covers:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WZS9QYP/
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0196JUY7Y/
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0015ZVXIW/

Some of those are not available for awhile, like weeks. Maybe you can find something like it or buy in advance. Here is more from an Amazon search:

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=plastic+binding+covers

Then you can make something. Be careful of what you buy, a lot of people taking advantage right now. I usually like buying from Amazon itself rather than third party sellers. But sometimes I'll buy third party. Plastic sheets are one thing. If you get scammed, you'll get your money back perhaps from Amazon. But when people buy something like a mask, you don't know what you're getting. It might look okay, but be fake and not work right. My dad wanted me to look into other painter masks just in case this one stopped working, since it's old and the strap is weak. But I didn't know how good anything was. I saw some people complain about things not being what they were advertised as. So he'll just find a way to make it work if the strap breaks.

I do see some safety goggles that don't fit snuggly, but do allow for glasses:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07YLW5XDD/
$42.99

Sold by a third party.

Maybe there is something else on Amazon:

Anything that doesn't fit snugly, you still have to be careful in case you walk through where people have breathed. We just don't know to what extent that might be an issue. Face shields have that issue too of course. I like the idea where some grocery stores, and even some streets in one city they mentioned on the news tonight, have one way pedestrian traffic. You overtake some people of course, especially in a grocery store.

Maybe a face shield would be good for you Fred? Or even goggles if you don't have glasses. Those ones above are expensive.

At the moment, I've only been cleaning the perishable items that go in the refrigerator. Non perishable items I leave aside for a week or more since I have a lot of food I bought in advance and don't need what I buy right away. Some stuff I bought online at Amazon and at Walmart are sitting for awhile. At first I was opening the shipping boxes that I got, but decided I should wait to even do that. If you rip into the box, it might scatter stuff around. We have a shipping facility nearby here so some Amazon stuff could have been packed very recently. Stuff that goes in the freezer I am trying to buy less of because I need to defrost and clean everything in my chest freezer in my garage. Anything that comes out of it I consider contaminated when I use it. Outside of box, and inside the box if applicable. Cooking something thoroughly will kill it, but until that point, anything you touch could have it so you have to keep washing your hands if needed until you dispose of the packaging. Eventually, when I have a clean freezer, I'll clean everything that goes into it. But still, I would need to be careful of what is inside the packaging. It's possible, I assume, that the virus could have gotten frozen in the inner packaging. I have a freezer with my refrigerator that I have cleaned. The outside of stuff is safe now, but not the inner packaging.

There are some workers that package some products that have already been killed by the coronavirus:

Only now are they doing more.

Don't have a direct link, but saw on CNN the following:

"Tyson Foods is installing walk-through body temperature scanners
From CNN's Janine Mack

Tyson Foods, one of the world's largest meat processors, is using walk-through infrared body temperature scanners to prevent the coronavirus from spreading, executives said.

'We've purchased more than 150 infrared walk-through temperature scanners. So far, we have the scanners installed in four facilities: pork plants in Iowa and Indiana and poultry plants in Arkansas and Georgia,' said Tom Brower, Tyson's senior vice president of health and safety, on Friday.

The move comes after the company suspended operations at its Columbus Junction, Iowa, pork plant this week when more than two dozen workers contracted Covid-19 there."

I had seen on the news tonight about the Tyson deaths. (4 at one plant) They were installing plastic partitions between workers along assembly lines. Here is that report I saw:
